Hats off to Cole

Cole has officially completed his DOC Band® treatment! He has a beautiful round head with no signs left that there was even a flat spot to begin with.

As parents, we spent our fair share of time worrying about this process before we made the decision to move forward. "Should we wait and see if it improves on its own?", "Are we doing the right thing?", "Will he respond to the treatment?". We are committed to doing what is best for our son and ultimately knew that the sooner we started treatment, the bigger the benefit would be to him.

After consultation and casting, he began wearing his band on November 2, 2006. He was just 4 months old when his little crash helmet went on. We quickly learned that the only people stressing over it were Mom and Dad! It didn’t even seem to faze our little guy in the least. He slept, ate and played like he always had. And, while we are admittedly biased, we think he looked adorable with his new "accessory".

Because we moved forward with treatment so quickly, his 4-month-old malleable head responded very well - total treatment time was just 11 weeks. We realize that the timing worked out well for us and that treatments normally last longer but we had the advantage of Cole's "youth" and he seemed to go through a growth spurt right when we got started.

Needless to say that while we are pleased with the results, our biggest relief comes in knowing that we have averted any implications that Cole may have faced in the future if we had not treated his plagiocephaly. The best gifts we can give our child, with in our power, are the joys of being happy and healthy!

Here are some clinical before and after shots where you can see how flat his head was in the back and how it has now rounded out.

Next we have a collage of shots spanning the 3 months that he sported the cool cap!

And finally... some pics as the new man about town (with a chapped face due to the drool that accompanies teething)

Many thanks to our friends at Cranial Therapies. We couldn't be happier!!!

Here is how we all got started .

7 Months Old

7 Months Old and showing his age

Cole is 7 months old today.... and he has had better days. Cole is currently dealing with the following ailments: Double ear infection, wheezing cough and a chapped face due to the drool that comes with teething... then tack on the fact that the chapped face itches and Cole has discovered that bibs, Mommy and Daddy's shoulders and the floor make for good stretching posts which all lead to rubbing it raw. And with all that... Cole still managed to give us a smile :) He is weighing in at 17lbs 2oz and currently 27 3/4 inches in length.

As you can see, Cole is "sans" hat. One of the milestones this past month is that Cole finished the "rounding of the head" exercise and has retired the Doc Band to a stuffed bear in his room (a post all about his band removal is waiting in the wings).

Cole has also become more and more active this past month. While he isn't crawling quite yet that never stops him from making his way across the room. He is quite the little steamroller. He can rock and roll his way all around his school and home. Cole has started to push his chest up and straighten his arms into what will become the "on all fours" position but the backside hasn't quite made it off the ground yet... in due time.

Cole continues to be a social butterfly and really enjoys the company of other kids. He "talks" with them and enjoys "sharing" toys (you take mine, I will take yours). He also has become quite fascinated with Cooper the dog. Cole loves going out in the back yard and watching Cooper chase the ball. He screams encouragement and laughs as Cooper plays keep away from Mom and Dad.

As always... here is the updated look back at 7 months

Catch up

Busy days and being just plain lazy have resulted in zero updates in over a week. The lack of a "stern talking to" directed towards the webmaster by Cole's Nana and Pop Pop is only delayed due to the new webcam technologies whereby they can visit with Cole live each Sunday night.

That, however, is no excuse for the missing site updates. Therefore, here are a few random shots from the past week.

Low Quality Laughing Cole

Cole has a wonderful laugh! The goal on any given day is to make him laugh and smile as much as possible. The key is to find something that, excuse the pun, "tickles his fancy" for any length of time. You have to be ready for it as it comes and goes at the drop of a hat. While something may make him crack up at one moment, the same act or noise may not phase him shortly thereafter. But once you find the golden ticket you have to take advantage for as long as he is willing to play along.

The following video is very low quality as it was taken via a cell phone video camera at Cole's school. It was one of those moments where the simplest question of "What are you going to do today" made him laugh... so we kept asking and asking and asking. He let out some great belly laughs before hitting his new high pitch squeal that he discovered over the holidays... it is so piercing that it was too much to handle for the microphone on the phone.

These are the highlights we cherish each day. It is amazing how the simple sound of a child's laughter can relieve stress like nothing else :)

Every Boy Needs A Dog

Cole has recently become more and more fascinated with his best buddy at home... Cooper the Dog.

He has taken to always wanting to "pet" (read: grab) Cooper and watches him intensely as Cooper meanders around the house. Cole loves to see Cooper come running when it is time to go for a family walk and gets a big smile on his face when Cooper jumps up on the bed to join Cole as Mom settles in once they get home from work / school.

We like to think that Cooper is just as fond of his new younger "brother". Each day he is quick to stick his nose into the car seat to check up on the youngster when arriving home from a big day out.

Here is a "then and now" shot of Cole and Cooper.
